REFLECTION: Second Sunday after Pentecost
“Suffering produces endurance, and endurance character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us.” I read these words of St Paul to Roman Christians alongside some other well-known words which came to mind as I reflected on the unfolding picture worldwide of black suffering and endurance.
‘Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, Creeps in this petty pace from day to day, To the last syllable of recorded time; And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more. It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.’
In Macbeth’s world, death is merely the last act in a bad play and life is but a brief candle soon to be extinguished. It is a view that makes people of faith awkward as it appears to leave no room for hope or for a different outcome – since the basis of the Christian story is THAT there is a different outcome because of Christ’s death and resurrection. Yet today we are being confronted with this pertinent question: Where is the hope in the lived reality of so many, many fellow humans who have had every breath and every ounce of energy squeezed out of them, leaving them crushed and pummelled with their noses in the dust? We are headed one way if we persist on this trajectory – the final act of a bad play! We know the suffering which many have endured right here and continue to endure. Let us start a conversation on what hope looks and feels like so that we can all experience it, together.

Holy God, Lord of the harvest,
you send your labourers to spread the gospel:
call us to this work,
equip us by your Spirit:

Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.

Praise the Lord.
God bless the world,
Give it wisdom at this time,
Grant us relief and release,
Be with those who are ill,
And bless the carers fighting this pandemic
