REFLECTION: Third Sunday after Pentecost
In the play ‘Master Harold and The Boys’, there is a moment, told with razor sharp insight by Fugard and which hits you in the pit of your stomach, where the child is no longer just a child as he arrogates all the superiority and ‘rights’ his race bestows. In that moment, grown black men become boys as he becomes Master Harold! The Genesis reading today (Gen 21: 8 – 21) tells of such a moment concerning two boys; Hagar’s son is observed playing with Sarah’s son by Sarah. In Sarah’s world, the convivial playing together of a slave child with the master’s child holds consequences which she is not ready to contemplate. She decides it will have no place in her world and demands that the child and his mother be ejected and sent away. Abraham sends his son and his mother on their way with bread and a skin of water! The word ‘injustice’ is not mentioned in the story yet that same palpable thud is felt! The boy doesn’t utter a word despite his name, Ishmael, meaning ‘God has heard’! There is an echo of another story heard here. The one of Joseph who says to his brothers, ‘What was intended as ill by you, God has turned into good!’ The ‘ill intent’ is turned to good by God and a ‘new’ way opens allowing the lives of Isaac AND Ishmael to blossom! Our faith teaches that God is able to use whatever we have thrown at each other and open new ways for all, especially those who have been treated harshly and cruelly.

COLLECT FOR THE DAY
Lord Jesus Christ,
you tell us not to be afraid;
challenge us to abandon our selves,
encourage us to risk the sacrifice
that we may find the abundant life you promise;
for you live and reign
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
in the unity of the Blessed Trinity,
one God, for ever and ever.
PSALM 86: 1-10, 16-17
1 Incline your ear to me, O God, and answer me :
for I am poor and in misery.
2 Preserve my life, for I am faithful :
My God, save your servant who puts his trust in you.
3 Be merciful to me, O Lord :
for I call to you all the day long.
4 O make glad the soul of your servant :
for I put my hope in you, O Lord.
5 For you, Lord, are good and forgiving :
of great and continuing kindness
to all who call upon you.
6 Hear my prayer, O Lord :
and give heed to the voice of my supplication.
7 In the day of my trouble I call upon you :
for you will surely answer.
8 Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord :
nor are there any deeds like yours.
9 All the nations you have made
shall come and worship before you :
O Lord, they shall glorify your name.
10 For you are great and do marvellous things :
and you alone are God.
16 Turn to me and be merciful,
give your strength to your servant :
and save the son of your handmaid.
17 Show me some token of your goodness :
that those who hate me may see it and be ashamed,
because you, Lord, are my helper and my comforter.
God bless the world,
Give it wisdom at this time,
Grant us relief and release,
Be with those who are ill,
And bless the carers fighting this pandemic,
For Jesus Christ’s sake,
