REFLECTION: Fourth Sunday after Pentecost
In his letter to the Roman Christians St Paul makes this appeal: No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness but present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. The word ‘members’ is the same word used for limbs and organs of the body which is used elsewhere too in the NT by Paul. It makes no sense, he argues, for some limbs to inflict wickedness on other limbs of the same body even if they themselves had suffered and endured much – for you are doing it to yourselves! Instead, says Paul, God has done something wonderful by removing the ‘sin’ that causes the body to turn on itself and inflict wickedness on its members creating a new way of relating and being different limbs of one body. Enough is enough says St Paul to the believers in Rome. I find this very helpful in understanding what is taking place around me in the ‘Black lives matter’ movement. Here is my thinking. We are all members of the same human race, the human family. At various times in our sojourn here ‘members’ of our family have turned on themselves and inflicted terrible and shocking things on other ‘members’. It is not simply a matter of moving – would that it was – it is also about deeply imbedded beliefs manifesting as a culture which spawned this conduct. With some it is ingrained too. This week, in an Afrikaans reality game show, a contestant described their loss to the opposing team as a beating you would reverse only for a black person – using the K-word – it was the only way she knew to describe how bad the beating was. In the past, the law demanded it but ‘since we are not under law but under grace’, let’s live it!

COLLECT FOR THE DAY
your love stands firm from
generation to generation:
open our hearts to hear your word
that we may seek Christ’s presence
in everyone we meet:
through the same Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
1 How long, O Lord, will you so utterly forget me:
how long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I suffer anguish in my soul,
and be so grieved in my heart day and night:
how long shall my enemy triumph over me?
3 Look upon me, O Lord my God, and answer me :
lighten my eyes, lest I sleep in death;
4 Lest my enemy say ‘I have prevailed against him’:
lest my foes exult at my overthrow.
5 Yet I put my trust in your unfailing love:
O let my heart rejoice in your salvation.
6 And I will make my song to the Lord:
because he deals so bountifully with me.
O God, we carry in our own bodies
the death of the Lord Jesus,
that likewise we might manifest his life:
let not our spiritual foe prevail against us,
but with the morning light
raise us up from the sleep of sin and death;
through Jesus Christ our Lord
God bless the world,
Give it wisdom at this time,
Grant us relief and release,
Be with those who are ill,
And bless the carers fighting this pandemic,
For Jesus Christ’s sake,
